Rachel Who?

I know you’re all asking the question, “Who is this mystery woman, anyway?”

Aimee's Wedding

I started my education in 2004 with a five-time National Fiddle Champion finalist Katie Glassman and progressed with three-time National Fiddle Champion, Danita Gardner; and increased my Irish/Scottish tune repertoire with Dave Daley as both his student and five-year member of his band, The Giant Leprechauns. I completed nine of the ten Suzuki method books throughout my fiddling lessons and had purely Classical lessons from 2009 to 2011 with Megan Wheeler Portsche (Classical Music major at BSU, studied under Professor Craig Purdy). Though I was never overly fond of competitions, I placed third and second in the 2008 and 2011 Idaho Open Fiddle Contest’s Celtic division and made it to the semi-finals in the 2021 Young Adult division of the National Oldtime Fiddler’s Competition. Over the years I’ve had the fortune to learn from great Celtic fiddlers such as Hanneke Cassel, Randall Bays, Athena Tergis, Laura Risk, Casey Driessen, and Calum MacKinnon.

I’ve played with multiple bands as both lead fiddle and backup fiddle/harp in the Sacramento and Boise areas and performed at numerous venues including the Knitting Factory, the Egyptian Theater, the Nampa Civic Center, and the Sapphire Room. Fun facts: In 2012, I spent every Saturday for nine months street-performing at the Boise Downtown Farmer’s Market. I also once played fiddle non-stop for six hours while street-performing in historic Old Sacramento because the appreciative audiences just kept on coming and listening!

You can find me backing up the vocals of perfection that belong to Chad and Vashti Summervill and sometimes providing backup fiddle with the music team of Revive.

My latest performance endeavor has been the founding of a new Celtic fusion band called Beyond the Burren with a few of my extremely talented multi-instrumentalist friends! We blend Irish and Scottish songs and tunes with elements of Scandinavian, Appalachian, and other world flavors for all occasions (way more than just St. Patrick’s Day, ha, ha!) Click on the link above to visit the Burren’s website or find us on Facebook to stay updated!

My goal as an instructor is to share the music and the influences with which I’ve been blessed over the years. Head on over to the Lessons and Contact page to learn more about the learning opportunities I offer and get in touch with me.
